Working on brushing up on my CSS skills in Dreamweaver CS4. After working with our company's web content management system for a while, I felt the need to get back into the code. All is going swimmingly I'd say.

Sixrevisions.com has a great post on places to find graphic design inspiration. They actually refer to these as "unusual places", but some don't really seem so unusual to me (magazines). Overall a great post though and it really just serves as a reminder that design inspiration is practically everywhere... you just have to keep your eyes open for it :)

Well here is my first real go at creating a digital watercolor portrait in photoshop (click on the image to enlarge). I painted the strokes manually using the pattern stamp tool and some custom brushes. Overall I think the effect turned out pretty good. Now I'm ready for round two!

Once Again Smashing Mag has proven why they are at the tip-top of my inspiration list. Check out this list of 100 remarkable and obscure album covers. The list covers music from the Beatles all the way up to Green Day's just released 21st Centruy Breakdown. While I don't agree with every choice as being either unique or obscure, it's a very interesting list regardless. Bravo Smashing!

The Design Police have provided 5 printable pages that can be cut into little flag to call out such design fallacies as "Comic Sans is Illegal" and "Microscope Required". Print these out and enforce good design in your immediate jurisdiction! Let's make the design world a better place!

Star Trek, JJ Abrams & the Fine Art of Reinvention

Earlier tonight I went to see the new Star Trek helmed by Lost co-creator JJ Abrams. Despite the recent media barage hailing it as a great movie, I admittedly entered the theater a sceptic... "How can he POSSIBLY pull this off? How can he possibly do something interesting with a series that's slogged through 10 movies and multiple TV series?" I thought, but trust me, after 2 highly entertaining hours... I left a firm believer.

Star Trek in the hands of Abrams is like a vintage guitar in the hands of Jack White - you're well familiar with the classic sound, but what he brings to it is something raw and envigorating. From the excellent cast, to the break-neck pacing, to the moments of comic relief, note for note this is Abrams masterpiece. I would have thought it impossible to take a 40-some year-old mythology and without changing any of the core elements or characters to breathe new life into it. I was wrong.

This new reincarnation is to the original Star Trek series as the White Stripes are to a worn out blues standard - a raw, no BS, emotional, all-out rendition that most likely will propel this series forward for another generation... and I can't wait to see where it goes from here.

I was flipping through the channels tonight and ran across a show I've never watched - "Live From Abbey Road" on the Sundance channel. The line-up of studio performances seemed pretty impressive, MGMT, Alanis Morissete, and some group named "Elbow". I've never heard of Elbow before, but they were first up and performed "Grounds for Divorce". It had a really cool sound to it so I thought I'd create this post to spread the word. I'm not familiar with any of their other music (yet), but this song reminds me of Depeche Mode...and that's a good thing. Check it out!

Recently on YouTube I stumbled across this 9 minute video clip of a Johnny Cash interview. It's inspiring to hear the passion in Cash's voice when he discusses music and what it's meant to him throughout his life. Some highlights in this clip - Cash talks about when he first fell in love with music, how he dreamed about singing on the radio in Memphis, his first session at Sun Records, his brother Jack, the music teacher that told him to "always do it your way", his creative/song writing process and much much more. If you like a good smoldering blues number, check out this YouTube video for Dylan's new track "Beyond Here Lies Nothing." With Dylan's weathered, laid back delivery and the rumbling rhythm section, you can almost picture this tune as the background music for a Tarantino-esque bar scene... you know, the song that starts up right before the bar erupts into one of those glorious chair bashing brawls. It's a great new tune from a true legend.

I just caught The Hill Country Review & North Mississippi Allstars playing at State Theater in St. Petersburg, Florida and the whole show was great. Check out this YouTube Video of the opening to The Hill Country Review's "Psychedelic Sex Machine". As amazing as the whole show was, this part was definitely the standout. I've never seen anything like this before. I think he's running the washboard through a Wah-Wah pedal and then "playing" it by tapping and scraping it with thimbles?? Now how's that for creativity??

I love the blues. I believe that the power and emotion of a good blues song are truly timeless. That's nowhere more obvious than in this performance of "Boom Boom" by John Lee Hooker. There's a lot to be said for simplicity - one man, one guitar, a lot of talent, and a serious case of the blues. What more could you ask for?

My inspiration for creating this site

November 1st, 2007 I was blessed with my greatest source of inspiration. My son Waylon David Dunlap was born. Over the past 17 months he's ignited in me a renewal of interest in the arts. Seeing him discover the world has been such an amazing experience that it reminded me of what the world should be. It should be, was, and is an amazing place. It is a place full of wonder and in my life I've never felt wonder as strongly as I do when I discover a new piece of art. As Waylon grows up I can't wait to share that with him.

He already loves all types of music and usually within a couple seconds of hearing a song, he'll start shaking his hips and bobbing his head. This weekend he's added a new little flair to the shaking and bobbing... he's stomping his foot now (I've coined this new move "the stomp")! See, he's already "creating"!

It's so amazing to me how much he seems to love music already. Maybe he gets that from daddy. Since he seems to like music so much I've been on a search for new tunes lately and have found quite a lot of great bands - M. Ward, She & Him, Death Cab for Cutie, Mofro, The Hill Country Review, Lissy Trullie and many many more.

It occurred to me that since I'm discovering all this new stuff, why not make a blog about it and share it with everyone? So in that little way Waylon has already inspired me to create this site. More than that though he's totally shifted my priorities and my focus back to what is truly important in life - love, family, and art. What an amazing little guy and no doubt my biggest inspiration every day.

An Inspired Life/Welcome

Hi there. You may be saying to yourself "Oh boy. Another 'Inspiration' Blog. Woo ha." But I can assure you this blog will not be the typical motivational poster slogan, insert catchy phrase here, type of inspirational blog. It's not usually the "typical" that inspires me.

So what does inspire me?. Art, pure and simple, raw and passionate, uncensored and emotional - Music, paintings, sculpture, drawings, nature, film, concerts, performance. Art is everywhere and when you stop to take it in, to appreciate it in all it's forms, the world becomes a truly wondrous place.

That's what I hope to capture here... some of what's inspiring me day to day and why. Feel free to comment on what I post. In fact, I encourage it. Feel free to tell me what inspires you and why.
